An article on the cultural exchange fest – Japan Habba
(By Sahnya Mehra; March 2018)
In the last decade or so, Bangalore has witnessed a surge in the population of the Japanese community. Many of the expats work in companies of the automobile and technology industries, along with other Japanese corporate firms. Additionally, the city attracts many Japanese business visitors each month. There is a rapidly growing Japanese influence in Bangalore, mutually benefitting both the cultures that co-exist in the city.
The two cultures share many similarities – a deep rooted sense of respect for the culture and traditions of the countries; the ancient folk costumes, dances, songs and practices; the celebration of nature and festivals of harvest – to name a few. Another element of commonality is the respect and honour given to elders and learned people. The Japanese call their masters “sensei”, while the Indian word for it is “guruji”. Additionally, both societies are considered to be conservative to the western world, especially when it comes to public displays of affection.
The Japan Habba is a cultural exchange festival that seeks to strengthen these very similarities, while simultaneously celebrating their differences. It aims at giving an insight into Japanese music, dance, arts and crafts, while promoting and consolidating Indo-Japan bi-lateral relations. Since its conception in 2004, it has compelled people – both Indian and Japanese from various parts of India to travel to Bangalore in order to be a part of the merriments.
The 14th edition of the Indo-Japanese festival was held over the first weekend of February, in 2018. The JN Tata Auditorium, a part of the Indian Institute of Science, was the epicentre of the festivities. The theme was based off the idyllic city of Aomori – the northernmost prefecture on Japan’s main island of Honshu, famous for its large-scale apple cultivation and snowy climate.
The turnout was spectacular, and visitors had the opportunity to experience innumerable aspects of Japanese culture. There were four main areas of action – the stage performances, the stalls and booths set up, the food courts, and the demonstration areas. The latter was the area where people could cosplay anime characters, take pictures while in character, and give an overall sense of the culture of costumes and anime that’s so inherently famous to Japan. Some also took part in a mock experience of a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony.
Many Japanese organisations had set up stalls, which were of different types. Some sold bookmarks and other handmade handicraft items, where people tried their hand at Japanese calligraphy, while others played traditional Indian and Japanese games. Some stalls had viewings of various art forms like Origami, Kirgami and Ikebana, and others were purely dedicated to selling a product, like cuppa-noodles.
Some stalls functioned as foreign language centres, and one of the most startling, yet pleasing features was the presence of booths dedicated to Employment and Educational opportunities in Japan.
The food court displayed several stalls, filled with both Indian and Japanese delicacies. One could choose to sample a traditional Bento Box, or instead have a traditional Andhra biryani. Several cafes and pastry shops had set up booths to sell pastries, biscuits, or drinks.
There were several stage performances, by both Indian and Japanese communities. There was a spirited rendition of ‘Jai Ho’, a Japanese Quiz by IJCCI, and even a play in Japanese with Indian thespians!
For the last 14 years, the Japan Habba has been a platform that celebrates the similarities, and differences between the two cultures, and promotes an exchange of knowledge and lifestyle.
Takayuki Kitagawa, the Consul - General of Japan in Bangalore, states that there is now a “current atmosphere of co-operation” which makes it easier to create a “long – standing cordiality in diplomatic relationship between the two nations.”

On the 13th of March, 2018, I had a day out on the town with my Mentor, and Editor, Miho S. Malhan. We spent the day in Indiranagar, a downtown shopping and commercial area of Bangalore.
The day started off as it always does, with me dealing with the gruelling task of public transport. I took an auto to Miho‟s house, and she met me warmly at the door. After a few minutes wait, we were in her car, en route to Indiranagar, which was barely 20 minutes away.
Our first stop was at WeWork, in the Embassy Golf Links Business Park. WeWork is the world‟s largest community working space. I was completely blown away by the place. With state-of-the-art working spaces, hi-tech equipment, and laid-back vibe – it spoke to me. But the most stunning feature of the place was probably the people, themselves. The place had a young, trendy vibe to it, which was absolutely buzzing with energy and creativity. A man, maybe in his early 20s, showed us around. He works as the event co-ordinator, and briefed us on the types of facilities available to their clients.
After about half an hour, we headed to Taneira. Taneira is a luxury saree shop affiliated to the Tata Company. The store exhibited beautiful handpicked saree designs, from over 30 weaving clusters, from various types of traditional Indian styles, like – Banarsi, Ikat, Kota, and even Kanjeevaram. What makes Taneira stand out is that fact that they are trying to modernize the sari, and make it a wearable, comfortable outfit for the modern, active woman.
After Miho explained the techniques and significance of a few styles to me, we realized that we were getting quite hungry, and decided to get lunch.
So, we ended up at Red Fork. The place, which eventually closed down in the 15th of March, 2018, was home to some of the most traditional Parsi food in Bangalore. The traditional food of the Parsi community usually compromises of a dish made of rice, accompanied by lentils or thick coconut - based curry. Dished of meat and potatoes are common.
Since I had never sampled Parsi cuisine before, Miho wanted to take me to one of her all – time favourite places, for one last meal. Before lunch was served, we discussed my last writing assignment, and Miho gave me valuable feedback about my writing. We ordered a chicken biryani, pea cutlets, and an exquisite dish called “Dahi mein Bheeda” – a thick gravy made of yogurt with bits of okra in it. The meal wan amazing, and for dessert, we were served a bowl of tiny meringues.
Miho then wanted to do a bit of grocery shopping, so she took me to „Happy Healthy Me‟ – an organic food store, with a tiny café attached to it. After a quick Google search, I found out that that the store is India‟s first 100% certified organic food brand, and grocery shop. I shadowed Miho while she shopped, and took notes on some of the food available, for future reference.
Finally, we stopped at Lavonne – a artisanal patisserie and academy of baking science. Over a cup of espresso, and a shared chocolate mousse, Miho and I spoke about our lives, and what was to come over the next few days or my working with her. She even sent me home with a few Danish pastries for my parents.
Overall, I had an amazing time, and was excited about the kind of exposure I got from the day. I love that I got to try new things, and as always, learnt so much from Miho.
An Essay on the organisation of New Ark Mission: Home of Hope
(By Sahnya Mehra; March 2018)
On the 17th of March, 2018, I, along with the members of Muse Creations charity organisation visited the New Ark Mission charity home.
Founded by T. Raja in 1997, New Ark Mission: Home of Hope has been taking in poor and destitute people off the streets of Bangalore – nursing them back to health, and giving them a home to stay in. ‘Auto’ Raja, as he’s affectionately known as, was a man who once led a similar life. As a youth, he took to stealing, drinking and gambling, and lived on the streets for two years before getting his life together.
As of today, New Ark is a successful organisation that infinitely benefits society. There are a total of 170 residents staying in the home. There are three distinct living facilities – the female, male and children’s wings. Additionally, there is a separate area for kitchens and a pantry located within the premises. The children’s wings has an attached play area – which includes a swing set, basketball hoops, and several other amenities for the children to learn, and grow.
We first went to their main office on campus, and were shown a short documentary on how the home started, and the work that they do. There have been several success stories, and it’s evident that New Ark has been doing immense good for the community, as a whole. With the help of the Bangalore police, and the 108 Ambulance service, they have been able to save and provide help to so many poor and destitute citizens of the city. As many as 1,500 people have even been integrated back into their families.
After the documentary, we were taken to the children’s wing, where the members of Muse Creations had brought different types of games and equipment for the children to play with.
The members split into small teams, each to handle a different play area. Some showed the children how to play a fishing game where the kids could pick up drawings of fish with a magnet at the end of a rope. Some of the men played football with the children, while others kept the children entertained with toys and playhouses. I, along with two other members, helped the children with drawing and colouring. The atmosphere was lively and cheerful, and the air was filled with sounds of upbeat music, and the ecstatic cries of children.
After a while, we gave out biscuits and bottles of pro-biotic drink to the children, while asking them for their feedback. Many suggested that we bring more sports – related games, the next time we visited.
We ended up staying for about two hours, and at the end, Miho gave the organisation a donation on behalf of Muse Creations.
As someone who has studied Psychology, and worked closely with under-privileged children, the experience wasn’t a jarring one. But it was impactful, nonetheless. I’m grateful and humbled to be able to call myself privileged, and wish to continue to give back to society in order to help those who need it.
An article on the Classical Dances of India
(By Sahnya Mehra; March 2018)
India is an incredibly diverse country, bursting with colour and culture. So it’s no surprise that there is a wide variety of classical dances, each with its own unique traits. In India, dance is regarded as an ancient and celebrated tradition, steeped in rich spiritual and religious connotations. Some forms of dances may also stem from cultural practices like harvest festivals.
With religious dances, there is a ceremony which is strictly adhered to. Most often than not, a hymn is sung, to be addressed to the gods, and the dance that accompanies it is done as a form of worship. It is regarded as one of the purest forms of devotion. The costumes usually include a thick strip of bells worn around the ankles, which make a soft chiming sound when the dancer moves their feet.
In ancient times, these dances were patronised by the rulers of the region, and were performed by the artists in a special pillared hall of a temple, usually close to the inner sanctum of the Gods.
One of the most defining features of Indian Classical dances is the complex system of hand gestures (mudras) used as a technique of expression. Each gesture has its own unique meaning. Some are single hand gestures (Asamyukta Hastaah), which are to be executed either hand, on its own, or by both the hands simultaneously (Samyukta Hastaah). Ancient scriptures dictate that there are fifty two mudras, in total. For example, one of the most widely recognised mudra is the “Alapadma” or the symbol of a lotus in full bloom.
In later years, Classical dances evolved to include common expressions and themes from social life and personal experiences, which resulted in a surge of popularity and visibility of the various dance forms.
Indians have a special God of dance – Nataraj, the lord of all dances. He is believed to be a form of the god Shiva, and is said to perform cosmic dances which delicately balance life and death – turning the universe in a harmonious cycle.
BHARATANATAYAM:
One of the most recognizable classical dances of India is Bharatanatyam. Originating in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, the dance form traces its origins back to the Natyashastra, an ancient treatise on theatre and performing arts. It was originally a temple dance solely for women, used to express mythological stories and religious devotion. Yet over the millennia, Bharatanatyam has evolved into also being a form of art, in itself.
The dance movements are characterized by bent legs at the knees, while the feet keep up a constant rhythmic pulse, along with characteristic mudras that narrate a story, or give meaning to the performance.
KATHAK:
Kathak is, occasionally, a dance of love, performed both – by men and women. The movements include a system of intricate footwork, categorised by a sharp beat of stamping the feet, and hand gestures adapted from normal body language. One of its defining features is the importance of facial expressions that accompany the dance moves.
It began to be practiced by Kathakas, performers and storytellers who used a mixture of dance, song, and drama in their art.
KUCHIPUDI:
Unlike some of the other dance forms, Kuchipudi requires talent in both dancing and singing. Originating from Andhra Pradesh, it’s a highly ritualized dance, accompanied by a formal segment of song-and-dance, sprinkling of holy water, and burning of incense. It also includes an invocation of the goddesses.
While originally being performed solely by men, today it is a dance predominantly presented by women.
FOLK DANCES:
India is a country that’s revolves around agriculture – so it’s no surprise that one of the most defining features of the country is the abundance of harvest festivals, and the folk dances that accompany them.
These folk dances rarely have any religious connotations; rather, they have a feeling of celebration and thanksgiving. Indian folk and tribal dances stem from the different socio-economic traditions, and each state adds its own unique feature to the dances. For example, Garba – which is practiced in the northwest, includes a heavy costume of a ghagra choli with mirror and beadwork on colourful patterns. Dandiya is a form of dance which incorporates wooden sticks that are clapped together to the beat of the music, accompanied by an intricate formation of dancers. The ever – popular Bhangra relies on sporadic and continued shoulder movements that lend a frivolous, yet spirited feel to the dance.

In India, the word ‘Sanskaar’ is tossed around loosely. But how many of us truly know what it means to be a ‘sanskaari beta’?
When you ask the average Indian millennial what the word means, it’s most likely that they’ll immediately roll their eyes, sigh deeply, and tell you of the last time someone (usually an elderly person) went on and on at them for not being ‘sanskaari’.
The word, though of Sanskrit origin, has ambiguous meanings. Some would define it as code of conduct, while others tend to see it as more of a set of moral values. Generally, it’s a sort of way of life of Indian people – more tangible than an ideology, yet not as binding as a culture.
It’s also a sort of rite of passage into adulthood. For example, the piercing of a child’s ear, the sacred Thread Ceremony of the Brahmins, marriage, etc. can also be considered sanskaar, as they serve to move a person through the stages of childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.
It’s also something that people have diverse and compelling opinions about, and evokes equally varied reactions amongst Indians, especially the youth, who are simultaneously caught between the modern and traditional spheres of life.
Indians are considered to be some of the most conservative people, so it’s no surprise that the youth tends to follow many rules and practices set by their elders. To a lot of Indian youngsters, the concept of a conservative sense of morality is extremely important. Many say that they like the sense of righteousness and discipline that it brings about, along with the fact that they feel like the concept of sankaar is integrated into their life seamlessly, and has been for generations, especially when it comes to respect for their elders and their family. They find it important to follow certain traditions that adhere to the concept, as they feel that it reflects on their family and quality of upbringing. For example, Indians, along with many other South Asian cultures, practice the act of removing one’s footwear before entering a home. This is done for several reasons – some of which being the need for cleanliness, along with respect for the Gods, which are often represented as idols in people’s homes.
Yet, on the other hand, many say that they would willingly go against the concept of sanskaar. In the sense that, they would go against the societal concept, if it should ever infringe on their own personal core values. Also, if the ideology is causing any harm to an individual or animal in any way, they would openly and vehemently oppose it. For instance, many feel like certain concepts of sanskaar clash with feminist beliefs, like the performing of ‘Last Rites’ of a Hindu funerary ceremony. According to tradition, a woman isn’t allowed to perform any rites for a deceased person at their funeral. Only a male family member, like the brother or son, can. Similarly, in Muslim tradition, women aren’t allowed into graveyards. This is seen as a form of disrespect, as women are equal to male family members in every way, and should be allowed their own personal form of grieving and closure.
Additionally, some youngsters – while still following certain practices, say that the main purpose of sanskaar isn’t being valued, in these modern times. They feel that in the olden days, it was a spiritual concept put in place to serve some benefit. It was something that might have had immense significance in earlier times, and was seen as an essential practice in everyday life. But lately, the entire theory has become far more materialistic, which has warped the practice of it. Some state that the meanings behind many of its practices have started to become obsolete, especially in the minds of the modern - day Indian. For instance, to this day, many people of the older generations deem it fit to comment on how a young woman chooses to present herself. Many scorn the idea of wearing western clothes or getting tattooed, as it isn’t “a part of our culture”, and because it supposedly will soil their sanksaar. This notion of attributing one’s way of expressing themselves to their moral beliefs is not only backward and narrow-minded, but also extremely problematic to the psyche of a young person.
Sanskaar, as a whole, is a subject that is extremely multi-faceted. It can also be interpreted, and practiced in unique ways. The Indian Millienials of today are an enigma in themselves. We’re opinionated, multi-talented and extremely ‘woke’. So it’s no surprise that a concept like sanskaar – something we’ve grown up with listening to our entire lives – has formed a strong basis for the kind of people that we are, and will continue to be.
An article on a recent culinary study, held by Japanese students in Bangalore
(By Sahnya Mehra; March 2018)
Japanese cuisine has, over the last few years, become all the rage. In Bangalore, particularly, many Japanese restaurants have cropped up all over the city. While the authenticity of many places can be debated, caterers from all over the city are starting to offer everything from Tempura fried meats, to food in Teriyaki sauce, and the ever – popular sushi and sashimi.
On the 22nd of March, 2018, a group of college interns held a tasting of traditional Japanese food at WeWork EGL, Bangalore. The Takahashi Group, from Fukuoka, is a company with an incredible story. In 1965, Mr. Kawahiko Takahashi, the owner of an established textile company, opened one of the first sport and fitness centres in Japan. Within the next decade, he went on to establish a company that dealt primarily with play areas, game arenas, and bowling alleys. The current CEO, Mr. Hikotaro Takahashi, grandson on the founder, went on to not only expand the company, but revolutionize it. As a college student, he was inspired by other nationalities and cultures, and developed a global perspective of life.
Today, Takahashi Co. Limited serves as a “locally – focused general trading enterprise”. The group manages several branches of their main company, with businesses in sports, fitness, agriculture, foodservice, and real estate. This gives them an enigmatic presence in diverse fields of business. With their slogan of “Creating Something to Live For”, they have established themselves as a household name in Japan.
Looking to expand into India, Mr. Takahashi had personally accompanied a batch of interns to Bangalore, along with Mr. Tetsuro Fujimi, the Executive Concierge of Startup Café Fukuoka City, and current Business Planning and Development Office Director with the Takahashi Group.
The Takahashi Group had recently started an entrepreneurial program for students, as an offshoot of their parent company. A major part of the course is to engage students in the actual processes of marketing and development. This involves them undertaking week - long trips abroad, in order to not only learn the culture and tastes of other countries, but to gain awareness of the products being developed. In 2017, students visited San Francisco, and this year, Bangalore was chosen to host the interns that had applied to the program. The focus is to conduct a market survey into the eating habits of working Indians, and to test whether some of their food products would sell, here. This time, the concept was unique, as the interns had the task of actually developing the product to be sold, as compared to just marketing an existing commodity.
The interns, who are all in the process of pursuing various fields of study – were looking to develop easy, hassle - free food for the working person who’s constantly on the move. With a target market of people within the ages of 25 - 35, who lead a hectic corporate life with little time to spend on cooking, the students set out to market food that could be eaten as quick snacks, which were a healthy and a complete meal in itself.
The students had been preparing the delicacies since 8 am, that very morning, in order to have it displayed at 12 pm. The final menu was decided a few days prior to the event, and on the 22nd, the spread was open to all the employees of WeWork, and other professionals who worked there.
The employees were served tori - karaage, a Japanese style fried chicken, okonomi - yaki, a savoury pancake with spinach and onions, udon noodles with a spicy sauce, and a platter of smoked chicken ham. An assortment of spices was served alongside. The sharpness of the wasabi, the zest of the Ponzu – a citrus flavoured soy sauce, and the aromatic yuzu – a lemon chilli paste, all contributed the overall experience of the food.
The students gained feedback from various people, after the event. It was found that most people who had sampled the food had never tried Japanese cuisine before, and were pleasantly surprised by the variety of food served. Many said that the fried chicken was a relatively familiar taste – likely due to the presence of American fast food restaurants, which serve a similar batter - fried chicken – but most found the okonomi - yaki (pancake) to be an entirely new flavour. One of the biggest hits was undoubtedly the udon noodles. A soft, mild flavoured noodle made of wheat flour, the udon noodle is extremely versatile. One of the major benefits is that it can take on the taste of any item paired with it, while still maintaining its simplicity.
A large amount of people stated that they would definitely want to buy the food if available to them on a regular basis. The only complaint was that the people would have liked more vegetarian options to the food – an idea that is extremely important to take into consideration, when catering to Indian preferences and palates.
The session was deemed to be a success, and the interns were extremely satisfied with the quality of feedback received. It was a relatively novel experience, for both the nationalities involved, and was one that probably shed a lot of insight into the intricacies of each culture. Eventually, it always comes down to food!

"Feeding for a hungry child is not charity. It's our social responsibility."
Good bye Japan!
MADE IN INDIA。

Dear Mr. Phan Wannamethee, President of the World Fellowship of Buddhists,
Bodhgaya in Bihar, India, where Lord Buddha sat under the bodhi tree and realized enlightenment, is the one and only sacred place for Buddhists throughout the world. Emperor Ashok built vajrasana as its memorial, and several Dynasties in their respect arranged the cathedral of Mahabodhi Temple. In the 7th century, Xuanzang worshiped the temple which is in about the same height as the present. In countries where Buddhism was inherited, nearby people went to pilgrimage to Bodhgaya remembering Lord Buddha, and distant people remembered and imagined his achievements. Since the enlightenment, Bodhgaya was the center of the world Buddhists for 1700 years.
In the beginning of the 13th century, however, the Islamic army invaded, destroyed Buddhist temples across India and killed many monks and nuns. Buddhism then was destroyed, and the cultural properties of the temple were buried and hidden in the earth. Finally in India where Buddhists are gone, the existence of the temple became forgotten.
In 1880, Alexander Cunningham, the founder of the Archaeological Survey of India, identified the location of the temple and implemented a large-scale excavation so the temple appeared beyond 600 years. The Buddhists of the different countries visited Bodhgaya, vowed to vajrasana and worshiped the temple again. However, Buddhagaya came to be owned by Mahant, the Hindu brahman zamindar, and Hindu pujas were held in the temple’s precincts. The statues of Buddha were taken away and stupas and small temples which the dynasties donated were about to be destroyed.
In 1891, Anagarika Dharmapala, who was a lay Buddhist and worried about the situation of the devastated Bodhgaya, established the Mahabodhi Society and commenced the protest movement for return of Mahabodhi Temple to Buddhists. Buddhists in then Japan established “Indo Busseki Kofuku-kai” (the Society for the Recovery of Buddhist Ruins in India) to cooperate with the movement, and Buddhists in different countries took various actions.
Following the independence of India in 1947, the Indian Government showed a policy to make Bodhgaya an international center of Buddhism, established Bodhgaya Temple Act in 1949 and launched the Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee therefore the management right of the temple was handed over from Mahant to the committee. Under this law, however, it is decided and admitted that a total of nine people, four members of Hindus including Mahant, four Buddhist Indian nationals, and Chairman (Hindu) who is Director of Gaya district of the State of Bihar constitute this Hindu-dominated Management Committee. This fact, thus, still has been the main cause of various unreasonable irrationalities for Buddhists, and the problem continues to the present age.
On 14th October 1956, Maha Bodhisattva Dr. Babasahib Ambedkar, who drafted the Republic Constitution in India, took off from the yoke of the caste discrimination that persisted deeply in India, together with the population of 600,000 people of the suppressed class at Nagpur in Central Province and converted to Buddism. Then Indian Buddhism raised the burning flame of its reconstruction and began to walk the way of the practice of dharma to realize liberty, equality and fraternity. I myself was born in Japan, but on the way of this road that Lord Buddha preached I met a crowd of Indian Buddhists who were poor but started to walk forward so I decided to walk with them. I have eaten the same things as they have, living in the same place, performing conversion ordinances and Buddhist ceremonies, organizing those Buddhists and doing various social movements. Then, with the cooperation of many people, I acquired Indian nationality and became Indian. As more than 60 years have passed since Dr. Ambedkar's conversion, now Indian Buddhists are increasing their numbers greatly.
In this way, the Indian Buddhist people got concerned about the circumstances under which Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya, the fundamental sacred place of their own faith, is under the superior control of the other religion. Then in 1992, they started a protest movement calling for return to the Buddhists of the temple to the Government of India, Bihar State Government, and the Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee. We have used various peaceful means and developed various movements. We acted like a demonstration march towards the capital Delhi and Bodhgaya, implemented the campaign such as fasting and sit-in, submitting a petition to the President of Indian Government and Chief Minister of Bihar, sent a letter to the UN Secretary General. I visited the headquarters of UNESCO in Paris and the office of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva and raised international interest in this issue. Our movement over 25 years greatly contributes to the improvement of the situation in Bodhgaya. However, the fundamental problem around the management right of the temple is still in the state of applying the Bodhgaya Temple Act of 1949 therefore our wish has not yet been fulfilled.
In 2012, I filed a case in the Supreme Court of India seeking the abolition of the Act and the enactment of a new law. The trial had been suspended for a long time, but full-scale deliberation began in July this year, and finally, the Supreme Court's decision is about to come.
This campaign is also a human rights movement for Indian Buddhists who figured out Dr. Ambedkar as their leader to establish their own existence. Moreover, Buddhists around the world hope for an early settlement of the contradiction of the central sacred place. Even in Japan, various people have been involved since the time Anagarika Dharmapala played an important role, and we have received support and cooperation from many people such as Joint Council for Rinzai and Obaku Zen and Okayama-ken “Dōwa Mondai ni torikumu Shūkyō Kyōdan Rentai Kaigi” (Religious Sects’ Solidarity Conference to Address the Dowa Problem in Okayama Prefecture) for our movement. We are hoping that the management rights of Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya will be fully returned to Buddhists. Its return will make a big contribution to the future of Buddhism where Buddhists around the world will regain their central sacred place, gather together mainly in Bodhgaya and recommend peace and symbiosis for humanity. We will appreciate it if you would recognize this problem accurately, and we also would like you to support and cooperate with concern.
Please, everyone, stand up as Buddhists of the world with Indian Buddhists who have the same teachings of Lord Buddha as the light of dharma.
Please propose to the Indian Government, the Bihar State Government, the Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee the returning of the management rights of Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya to Buddhists. Please discuss this issue with sects and organizations to which you belong, and appeal to the Indian authorities to carry out the return by their peaceful decision.A long-term trial at the Supreme Court requires a great deal of expenses. Please aid the trial fee.
Sincerely yours,
13 Nov, 2018
President of All India Executive Committee for Release of Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya

Ise shrine can be said that the origin of Japan. My visit to this place was a rare experience that awakens my identity as a Japanese. (If you are interested in Ise Jingu, please read below.)
I have arrived the final destination Tokyo! I’ll stay here for 3 nights and go back to my home in Bangalore. I met Machi who use to work in Bangalore as an internship student. Lovely night.
Good morning Nagoya. I’ll go to Ise today!
I came to Ise City to visit Ise Grand Shrine which is the most sacred Shinto shrine in Japan. The shrine is one of the most holy place, and it has strong connection with the Japanese Emperors of succession.
Kurashiki is located in Okayama Prefecture. Kurashiki has a preserved canal area that dates back to the Edo Period, when the city served as an important rice distribution center. The name "Kurashiki" can be roughly translated as "town of storehouses", which refers to the storehouses where the rice was kept.
Many of Kurashiki's former storehouses have been converted into museums, boutiques and cafes. During the Meiji Restoration (Japan's Industrial Revolution period), factories were built, including the Ohara Spinning Mill (Kurabo Indastries).
The reason why I visited Kurashiki is that I wanted to see traditional handicrafts, and I wanted to visit the Ohara Museum of Art.

One of the reasons that I visited Kurashiki this time is that I was interested in the Ohara Museum of Artis. The museum was established in 1930 by Magosaburō Ōhara as Japan's first museum for Western art. I enjoyed the paintings of El Greco, Monet, Matisse, Gauguin, and Renoir etc. The museum also presents Asian art and contemporary art. It was really fantastic place to learn the history of Western art in Japan!
Before I left Kurashiki, I stop by a “Cat Cafe” and came to Nagoya to stay overnight. I will go to Ise tomorrow morning. Quite busy traveler!
The seminar for the students went very well! The environment of the university has changed greatly since I was a student. Most of the students had experience of study abroad. I was impressed by the drastic change!
After I finished the lecture to the students in Shimonoseki, I came to Kurashiki by “Shinkansen" bullet train. It is the first time to come to the city for me. The night walk was really enjoyable.
I left Fukuoka and came to Shimonoseki today. Shimonoseki is a port town located in the westernmost part of Honshu. The reason why I visited this town is that I will do lecture at my alma mater, the Baiko Gakuin University tomorrow. I checked in a seaside hotel with a nice view overlooking Kyushu on the other side. It is a nostalgic sight.
