Haïg Sarikouyoumdjian Duduk Ensemble
Armenia
The duduk, a traditional type of clarinet, reflecting the softness and majesty of the mountains, became one of the most famous musical instrument in the world in the nineties, mostly because of Peter Gabriel’s album “Passion”.
A counterpart of this instrument also exists in Azerbaijan and Iranian Kurdistan. But it is mostly in Armenia that the duduk by its sound, touches our souls. Impossible to imagine Armenian music without the soft, lyrical, and sometimes sad and soulful sounds of this unique instrument. Probably no other instrument can so accurately and profoundly express the soul of the Armenian people: it represents singing mountains, crying greybeards, and laughing children.
Duduk is considered to be one of the oldest musical instruments in the world. At this point in time it can be encountered in different Caucasian countries, however, it is believed that theduduk has a purely Armenian origin. According to some deep studies, duduk appeared during the reign of Armenian King Tigran II The Great (95-55 BCE). In the V century, Armenian historian MovsesKhorenacy mentioned the musical instrument “tsiranapoh” (the original name of duduk) in his works, which are the oldest written reference of this musical instrument.
The original name “tsiranapoh” is translated as “a tube made from an apricot tree”.

Songs from an Island
Sardinia – Italy
The tradition of Sardinia island is the oldest one in the Mediterranean Culture.
The islands are a sanctuary for invaluable traditions. If we know Sardinia for its nuragic civilisation(II and I millenniums BC), its pastoral culture also inherited an instrument from the Neolithic age (VI millennium BC onward), an instrument preceding the antique Egyptian arghul and the archaic Greek aulos: the launeddas. This flute consisting of three simple reed pipes requires a special kind of dexterity.
Orlando Mascia is one of the most renowned maestro sonneurs of Sardinia and his art is not limitedto the launeddas. Inspired by nature, recreating the sublime atmosphere of the mountains through the profane or religious texts originating from shamanic rites, the Sardinian songs illustrate a breath of life through the festive rituals: marriages, balls, or religious services.
The fort which has never been broken.

Songs of water and rivers from Bengal
Raga on the Lake
India
Jaltarang (which means “waves in water”) is a percussion instrument consisting of a series of fifteen to twenty fine ceramic bowls placed in a circular arc in front of the musician who successively strikes theedges using fine sticks – like in the santur. Each bowl is filled with a specific volume of water to reach the right pitch of the notes chosen to play a certain raga.
This original instrument with a crystal clear sound, nearly forgotten in today’s times, is mentioned in an ancient medieval treatise and influences the north (Hindustani music) as much as the South (Carnatic music), the two sides of Indian art music.
Arshad Ali Khan, is a voice that appears to belong to a long-time experienced singer. That talks about the maturity that this young singer has already demonstrated, a prodigal child from a long lineage of singers and sarangi players of the Kirana gharana. A golden voice with a fine and blooming texture and the solidity of a rock. Along with the depth and fullness of his voice is the precision of taan at an astonishing speed, poignant intonation, in-depth knowledge of the ragas, and the perfect balance in their rendition. Arshad Ali Khan with his consumed art and magic gives us a masterful lesson in the khyal genre of singing.

Rhythm Divine 11, the river runs deep, choreographed by Astad Deboo and guru Seityaban Singh
Performed by the drummers of Shree Shree Nat Sankirtan and Astad Deboo
India
Astad Deboo, main Indian choreographer, has been working with the drummers for the last ten years and the first work Rhythm Divine was created with a grant by India Foundation for the Arts (IFA). Now in this second creation with the drummers, choreographer Astad explores the unrest in the region of Manipur and extends his work with them creating a cohesive new piece.
River Runs Deep begins on a gentle note, reflective of ordinary life as it is lived in the North East, with a gradual build-up to the sense of insecurity and even fear against which many people in the region actually conduct their existence. The build up to the crescendo is gradual and powerful, with the drums coming into play the tempo now frantic, in stark counter point to a prolonged session of Like form and content, neither can be separated.
Deboo was the first Indian Dance Company, Indian Classical / Contemporary to be invited for the celebration of the 25th Anniversary Of the International Arts Festival in Santiago Chile.
Regarding Astad Deboo:
“The North-east is a heart breaking amalgam of natural beauty and militant aggression, of lightning moves and glacial response, of the turbulence of politics and the calm pace of tradition, flowing one below the other like twin rivers. Sixteen years ago, I began my tryst with the region. A decade ago, the pungcholom drummers came into my life, young, vigorous, steeped in their own cultural traditions, performing with their instruments in a comforting cycle of familiar security. I wanted them to change. Their guru, Seityaban Singh, head of Shree Shree Govindji Nat Sankirtan in Imphal, already knowledgeable about my work with martial art performers in the Thangta tradition, proved an invaluable and prescient ally. Rhythm Divine I was born in 2007 and has since then made the drummers part of the international cultural landscape in five countries. Nationally, they have crisscrossed the sub-continent, from Delhi to Pondicherry and Kolkata to Mumbai. The pull of the drums in a contemporary, highly evolved setting, has always drawn the deepest appreciation. Seven years after the first work, I felt it was time to challenge the drummers in a different direction, that of a more open articulation of old fears through bold, new creative choreography that reflects in music and movement, a brasher engagement with restlessness and frustration…”
About Astad Deboo:
Astad Deboo, a pioneer of modern dance in India, is a contemporary choreographer and dancer, who employs his training in Indian classical dance forms – Kathak and Kathakali – to create a dance form that is unique to him. His work has been seen in seventy countries and a critic sums his work as poetry in motion.
