Your "sustenance". My "sustenance". The meaning of sharing.
Our driver, Antony, is a devout Christian. Yesterday morning he came to work with his bags in both hands.
“Madam, I bought about 20 plum cakes to give as Christmas presents to the people who work here. May I distribute them?"
He had never done anything like this before, so I asked him if it meant anything to him this year, and he said that it might be the last Christmas we would have here (since we would be getting a new house next year).
I said, “Sure. Actually, I’ll pay for the cakes” but he refrained.
And he gave us one, too.
Antony has been with us for ten years now, and I have written many times about the tragedy that befell their family four years ago in a holy place for Christians. As one of the people who witnessed their suffering after the loss of their elder son, I wondered what was going through his mind.
I started doing community services shortly after I started living in this country. I've already mentioned the background of this in my Muse Creation (NGO) 8th anniversary video.
Philanthropy or social services are not about "the rich giving to the poor”.
In this unequal world, where we stand is not always the same. Even the positions that we seem to have grasped for ourselves are actually obtained through sheer luck.
It is about the happiness that comes from sharing. Perhaps we can only understand this when we share it with others. Or, if someone helps us when we are in pain.
This is completely different from the world where charity is considered "hypocrisy" or "publicity". Unfortunately, these words is sometimes heard in Japan.
More than a decade ago, there was a time when I hired a young driver named Ravi for about two years. He often wore nice, colorful shirts. One day, I asked him.
“Ravi, how many shirts do you have?”
"About ten." I replied.
"I think I've seen more shirts than that”.
“Madam, every month I buy one new shirt and donate one old shirt to the poor.”
I was at a loss for words.
I wondered how much "sustenance“ I needed to survive. Whether you think it’s a lot or a little depends on your own sense of value.
If you can spare some of your own sustenance, whether visible or invisible, you may be able to find peace of mind by sharing it with others who are suffering.
Compassion is not something you offer for the sake of someone else. If it goes around and results in happiness for you and those around you, so be it.
Merry Christmas.
